Tips For Downsizing A Property
Moving home can be a very emotional time and there is much to be done within the process of doing so, however if you are downsizing your property as well, this can sometimes cause even more stress especially if this has been a much loved family home with memories.
But it doesn’t have to be and this can be a chance to focus on exactly what you want in a new home.
There are many reasons why people downsize their property, whether it’s nearing retirement, family have moved on, financial need or simply just desiring a smaller property but whatever the situation there are few things that you can do to try and eliminate some of the physical and emotional strains that accompany the move.
Think about where you want to be. This is the most important decision about your move – the ‘where’. Once you have decided on where you want to be, it will be easier to find the right property. If you love the area that you have always been in and have a good network of friends or family, then it makes sense to find somewhere that suits your needs in that demographic area.
However if you are a retiree or a person on their own, would you be better off in a community where there is support and a place to make new friends?
If you are moving away to a remote place, think about later on in life and whether you will have the facilities to be able to do what you need to – can you get to local shops and the doctors? Is there public transport within walking distance? All things you may need to consider.
This can depend on what stage of life you are in. If you are in retirement or later on in life, you will need to think about access, including stairs, hills etc.
If you have a family and need space – you will need to think about how much minimum space you can get by with and not go too small (or you might be moving again!).
Are you looking for a property that has certain facilities, outside space or workshop for a business, for example?
Take one step at a time and be positive about your move. Whether you are choosing to move home or not, you can make a decision to make it a positive thing. New start / new beginnings / new opportunity / new environment – a chance to focus on the new. Picture yourself walking through the front door of your new home and what this will bring for you (and your family if applicable). Plan how you are going to get through each stage of the move, from selling, choosing a property, to packing and physically moving home – planning can be key to making it a positive action.
Ask For Help
You are not alone! It may be a long time since you have moved home but there is always a network of people around you to help. We here at Clarkes can assist you completely along the whole process and can guide you when you are unsure, with a wide list of reliable, professional and trustworthy contacts ready to help in every aspect of your home move.
If you have family nearby, often they are willing to help with the planning, if not the physical side. Confide in friends and family where available and ask for help if you are able. The moving process can be less stressful if you have a network or support group around you.
Fitting into your new property
This may be the biggest headache if you are downsizing your property but don’t despair! Consider what items you really need and those that perhaps are not a necessity. Family memories are hard to depart with and the ‘clearing out’ process can be a hard conquest but if you are moving into a smaller property, then it is needed and you will need to be strong in saying goodbye to items.
Many household items can be given to charity organisations or auctions and sometimes family members may want things that have been in the family for a long time – so it’s not always a goodbye.
Think about the size of your new property, the floor plan and dimension and make a realistic decision on what you can keep.
We understand that moving home can be a daunting time but we hope that your experience will be positive one and a chance to be happy.
