Moving House Checklist
When moving house there are many things that need to be considered throughout the process and often things can be forgotten or left behind within the chaos of moving home and everything that it entails.
When you get closer to the moving date, there are certain things that you’ll need to do within a timescale to ensure everything is finalised prior to the date.
Everyone is different and everyone has their own way of organising what needs to be done, but setting yourself up with a checklist will help with the additional stress that you may experience throughout your moving journey.
You’ll need to inform all utility and financial companies of your change of address. Making a list of everyone you need to contact will make it easier to tick off once complete, knowing that the job’s done.
Here’s a list of the companies that you’ll need to think about contacting, there may be more to add to the list as you get started, but the basics will get you well on your way.

As well as informing companies of your change of address, there are physical things that you’ll need to plan. To help you get started, we’ve put together a checklist so you can make the process of moving home easier and more pleasant.
4-6 weeks prior to your move
There’s no point in moving items from one home to another if they’ve not been used in the past year or beyond. It’s time to get ruthless and to get rid of everything that you no longer have a use for. If you’re one for hoarding, it may be time to rethink what you really need and whether you will have space for it in your new home. Get yourself some bags or cardboard boxes and start creating charity shop or tip-run piles, ready to leave you with literally just what you’re wanting to take with you in your move.
Decide on removal preference:
Are you going to be using a removal company or doing the move yourself? Now is the time to research what options you have and to get in touch with removal companies to get quotes so you can weigh up what costs could be involved. Book your removal company as early as possible to avoid disappointment and to ensure booking is possible on your proposed moving date.
Time to purchase or order your packaging materials. Local storage companies can supply boxes and other materials required, as well as removal companies. Also larger supermarkets often supply materials or storage boxes, depending on what you need.
Once you’ve got your materials, start packing! Bit by bit, box by box, start adding in as much as you can to avoid a mad rush at the end.
If you’re downsizing and requiring further storage options for a short period of time, you will need to research local storage companies or storage options and ensure that you can use their facilities at the time you need it.
Contact the Post Office and set up your postal redirection service. You will need identification to complete this process and this can be set up for as little as one month to a year, on a renewal basis.
2 weeks prior to your move
Inform utility companies of your change of address:
As per the above list, you will need to inform every company that holds your details that you’re moving. The result in not informing companies, can mean that bank accounts are blocked or services are stopped so it is best to inform people as soon as possible.
Order furniture/furnishing for your new property:
If you’ve already measured up and know what you’re wanting in your new home, now is an ideal time to order the curtains, carpets etc ready for when you get there. These are things that you’ll not necessarily want to think of once you’re surrounded in boxes in your new home so preparing before you go will get that job ticked before you move.
Clear outside and loft spaces:
Often these are the things that get forgotten and left to the last minute. Many loft spaces are jam packed with items that are either no longer needed or junk that has been throw up ‘just in case’ it’s needed! Time to rid of all the things that won’t have a place in your new home.
1 week before your move
- Confirm your removal company booking.
- Gather all the keys for your property and arrange with your estate agent moving day.
- Finish up as much packing as possible so you’re not up all night the day before the move.
- Run down the freezer and other perishable foods.
- Cancel local services, i.e. milkman, newspapers, gardeners etc.
- Prepare a box of essentials for moving day.
- Strips all the beds and bag ready to be washed.
- Set down protective sheets on the floor for when removals are coming in and out.
- Keep the vacuum and cleaning equipment to hand ready to clean on your way out the door.
- Take the meter readings for utility companies.
